]]> Sun Sep 20 2009 UK Northern Nationals '09 http://richardsmith.fotopic.net/c1735456.html Saturday was a complete wash out so first thing Sunday morning the 32nd Annual Street Racer Championship was run. One shot qualifying then continuous eliminations, which saw Ian Kerr's Willys pick up beat Derek Beck's TVR in the final. It was then straight into qualifying for the Northern Drag Racing Championship classes. American Super Stock's field was slightly down on numbers, being the week after the Mopar Nationals, but it was no less competitive. Andy 'Rodzilla' Reynolds was in a very different monster this meeting, a HUGE Ford pick up but his consistency earned him pole position. Eliminations threw up some surprises, with both former champ Lee Chiles and current points leader Dan Houlston falling foul in early rounds by being a bit too eager on the line. It was a good day for the Billadeau camp all round, especially Scott who reached the final but it was Ashley Rawson who took the trophy and good chunk of points to boost his championship hopes! Elsewhere, Steve Parfitt's Quarter Pounder VW won Pro ET while Lee Chiles beat George Chiles in a modern Charger vs Challenger face off in Sportsman ET. In Air Cooled, no one could catch Rich Johnson's consistent 21 second Beetle again, and the Hot Rod final was an encore of Street Racer, with the same result as Ian Kerr took home another trophy. The Wild Bunch also held their Summer Showdown, with Chris Hartnell with his wheelstanding Backdraft slingshot taking the win. Wayne Nicholson's Lucky Devil Pro Mod Corvette was in attendance, with Wayne scaring everyone with some VERY dramatic burnouts! Old favourite Gonzo was also putting in some test runs. ]]> Sun Aug 2 2009 Northern Sportsman Nationals '09 http://richardsmith.fotopic.net/c1722208.html Threating clouds lined the track around midday but we escaped with a light shower and were back to sunshine in no time. Old Skool Ford came and ran a round of their championship and a Scooby vs Evo shootout was taken by the Subaru's 6-1! There were lots of breakages throughout all classes in the PDRC classes but a massive 36 cars entered Round 4 of American Super Stock with Scott Billadeau topping the qualifying list. Sam Carter Chiles continued her weekend winning streak when Howard Holmes red lit in the final. Air Cooled were running their 4th Round and Richard Johnson reached another final but this time finished the job by beating Michael Geraughty, who broke out trying to catch to him. The other classes were running their 3rd Rounds. In Sportsman ET it was Howard Holmes in another final but this time he won in his new Hemi powered estate, Daz Chandler took his Beetle to final of Pro ET and beat Jamie Hughes. Jamie however, went on to win the HR Challenge. Another round of NSCC saw the big hitters come out and Andy Hadfield's 9.39@150mph was too quick for Simon Boot, who ran a 10.39@139mph, in the final. A southern invasion saw quite a few different cars taking to the track, including the Taz Racing gang and some of Surrey Muscle's finest. There was also plenty from the John Sleath Race Cars stable providing some 9 second action! The UK Power Tour hit York, with Dave Billadeau taking the honours. The National Street Car Challenge ran a round of eliminations and was won by John Osbourne in his 100E. This event also saw the first ever Ladies Race, which ran a full elimination ladder and was won by Super Stock regular, Sam Carter Chiles. The mood was dampened in qualifying when Anette Billadeau had an encounter with the armco in father-in-law Bill's Charger. Fortunately Annette was ok, just a little shaken up and suffering a bit of a sore neck. A collection was made by the racers to help fund repairs to the Charger. Also taking place was the 23rd Annual Ford Shootout, 0-60 Championship, Modders Shootout round 4 and qualifying for the Northern Drag Racing Championship. In American Super Stock Rd3, Cheryl Swift topped the qualifying list. Come the final round it was Ashley Rawson facing that man again, Dan Houlston. Dan's second final of the year but Ashley pipped him at the line and took the trophy and prize money! The Shogun was out in force in Pro ET again as Pel Norman got to the finals again and ran just 0.02 off his dial in but Des Taylor had a much better reaction time and took the win! Des did this after beating Al Platt in the Sportsman ET Rd2 final too, all without any water in the engine! In Air Cooled Rd3, Richard Johnson was the one to catch (literally...) in his 21 second Beetle. Everyone he faced failed except Steve 'haircut' Purdon in the final who took his first trophy. Heads up racing in HR Challenge Rd2 saw the debut of Adam Cuthberts Jago Jeep with Chevy power, running a 10.75/126mph in the final to beat Chris Rounds 11.64/114mph in his Chevy powered Pop. NSCC was won again by Andy Hadfield. Also, Julian Webb fired his Jet dragster over the full quarter mile posting two 6.9 second runs! Andy Hadfield's mental Model T cruised to victory in NSCC, while over in round 2 of Super Stock, the bright yellow Charger of Martin Hough stayed ahead to beat Dan Houlston in the final. The decision was made to run Super Stock over the 1/8th mile. A one shot qualifier was taken with caution, especially once Pete Youhill took his Chevelle for a spin... Pete was fine with no damage to the car. PDRC eliminations were pushed through quickly but were ended prematurely when the heavens opened again. ]]> Sun Aug 3 2008 UK Northern Nationals '08 Part 1 http://richardsmith.fotopic.net/c1556583.html Somehow escaping most of the heavy rain seen passing in the distance, York Raceways biggest meeting of the year started off with American Super Stock Round 6. With Lee Chiles out in the quarters, Dan Houlston & Dave Billadeau made the most of the situation by making the finals. After winning the last two events due to Lee Chiles red lighting, Dan saw yet another red light but this time it was his and Billadeau was instantly handed the win! The Wild Bunch & Super Charged Outlaws also put on a great show, while the PDRC racers qualified for Sundays rounds. The 31st Annual Street Racer was full of drama and controversy but it was Charlie Stirling who emerged victorious. Nice one Charlie! In American Super Stock, 18 cars battled in eliminations but it was deja vu in the final where Lee Chiles once again red lit and gifted another win to Dan Houlston. Sportsman ET was a surprise with first time rookie John Cowling taking the win in his Cobra. Air Cooled Eliminator was decided on the lights too as Nigel Hull missed out on a hat trick by leaving a red on the tree and handing the win to Craig Perry. Hot Rod Challenge was won by Colin Brick in his Capri and Pro ET saw one qualifier, Andy Reynolds but no eliminations as Andy's Chevelle suffered problems. Round 4 of American Super Stock saw Andy Reynolds take the top spot in qualifying in his 'Rodzilla' Chevelle. In eliminations, current points leader Dave Billadeau suffered a gearbox breakage leaving a good opportunity for everyone to catch up. Lee Chiles and Dan Houlston made it to the final but for the second round running a red light determined the winner, which was Dan in his Camaro, who now climbs to 3rd in the points. The 22nd Annual Ford Shootout was won by Andy Bales, the Modders ran their 5th round and the NSA were also making passes. Round 2 of all the PDRC Championships were completed with Dave Rushforth's swift reaction times ensuring him victory in Sportsman, while Sag's 1st outing this year in Pro ET proved worthwhile after defeating Andy Bales in the final. Andy did however win the Hot Rod Challenge. Air Cooled Eliminator returned and once again Nigel Hull took the honours. American Super Stock ran its second round, with Dave Billadeau reaching his 2nd final of the year but was defeated by Dave Rushforth in a very close race. The PDRC classes were qualifying for Monday and the Modders Shootout round 4 also took place. Julian Webb was up making passes in the Split Second Jet Dragster too. Well done Pete! The overall victor was Dave Billadeau in his GTX, which recorded 0-60mph in 2.4 seconds. In the PDRC Championships Andy Bales took both Pro ET and Hot Rod Challenge, while Lee Chiles started his championship defence well winning Sportsman ET.
